Scope of Work at IRC

As an Immigration Program Intern, you will collaborate closely with the IRC’s Immigration Department to assist refugees and local immigrant community members. This role provides invaluable exposure to the immigration process, particularly for refugees, and offers a profound understanding of the local immigration system.

Learning Outcomes

Interns will acquire hands-on experience in:

  • Completing immigration applications for Green Cards, Citizenship, and other forms.
  • Making copies of petitions and supporting evidence.
  • Maintaining detailed case notes related to client files.
  • Working directly with clients to complete necessary applications.
  • Conducting follow-up communications with clients.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Immigration Legal Representatives in completing various immigration applications.
  • Create copies of petitions and evidence for client case files.
  • Engage directly with clients to facilitate the application processes.
  • Conduct follow-up phone calls to ensure clients’ application statuses are updated.

Qualifications Required for an IRC Internship

To be eligible for this internship, applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Current undergraduate or graduate student, or less than one year out of school.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, or Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in immigration is a plus.
  • Availability: Must be available to attend the office on Thursdays or Tuesdays.
  • Background Check: Successful completion of IRC orientation and a comprehensive background check (Live Scan & HireRight) is required.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: High level of cultural awareness and sensitivity, especially towards vulnerable immigrant populations and unaccompanied minors.
  • Communication: Effective communication skills and the ability to thrive in cross-cultural environments.
  • Organization: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
